Stewart was born in Scotland in 1961 and trained at East 15 Acting School in 1984 and
subsequently at the École Philippe Gaulier in Paris and Darpana Academy in
Gujarat, India.
He was a founder member of the highly acclaimed Scottish theatre
ensemble, "Benchtours" helping to create most of their shows between 1990 and 2004 and touring widely throughout Europe.
He has collaborated on theatre projects in East
Africa, Scandinavia and Cuba and has taught theatre skills throughout Europe and in India.
Before taking up acting he
worked as a journalist and as a nurse. Stewart has written several plays -
including "the dark room" and 4 "Rabbie Burns"
plays". He recently won an IGNITE award through the Scottish Playwrights Studio and regularly teaches
"devised theatre" skills in schools throughout the world. Most
recently he set up The Poetry Post Box, a creative writing /environmental
performance project for children.In 2010 Stewart was awarded an "Eileen Gallagher and Anne McManus (SHED Media) Scholarship" to study an MA in Television Fiction Writing at Glasgow Caledonian University, beginning in September. He Graduated in 2011 with a distinction and immediately was taken on to the BBC River City Shadow writing programme.
